Tapered Quarter Wave Single Driver Loudspeaker

by Lawton Deane

Bert Doppenberg of BD Design was absolutely right on with this TQWT design on his web page (very nice pictures) using just a 4" full range driver. I have not heard Lowthers, but thought the idea of full range drivers made a lot of sense. I wanted to get involved without a large initial cash outlay. The total kit from Bert was $150. this included everything except the cabinet. The only change I made was that I used a heavy duty binding post instead of the pair of cups that was supplied.

I must admit that I did not build the cabinets myself. I made a 1/2 scale drawing of the cabinet plans using 1" veneered rosewood MDF, and had a local cabinet maker build the cabinets. When the cabinets were completed except for one side not glued in place, I got the cabinets and installed the dampening material, (provided with the kit) the internal speaker wire, (Silversonic T-14), the port, and the binding posts. I then returned the cabinets to the cabinet maker for the final assembly.

The Sound… transparent with excellent imaging. The frequency response is quoted as 40 Hz — 20 KHz +/-3db. Sensitivity is 94dB @ 1 watt. I do not know if the bass reaches 40 Hz, but it is enough for me. It does not leave me lacking. For the first week or so, I did hunger for some additional bass, but as I grew to the overall sound, it became quite satisfying. Total cost $525.00. Cabinets are $225.00, shipping from Holland Via UPS was $110.00. Approximately $40.00 for wire, binding posts Etc.
