I found some old Karlson's on the side of the road. They have Calrad CR-12x speakers in them. Apparently the tweeter is out in one of them. I have pictures but I'm not sure how to post them, anybody? I'd love to know if someone has an exact replacement in a shoe box somewhere. Or if maybe there is a modern tweeter that I can put in place on both of them that may sound even better? It's about a 2.5 - 3" alnico magnet / paper cone tweeter, mounted co-axial in a cup. I could probably put something else in there pretty easy. Is this even worth playing with?
Thanks,
Bryan

first try them sans tweeters .......
do they have accordian surrounds ?

first you have to give them 'urls'
(upload them to a web address)
see #sneeky above
(your picture here:)
I ususally use my comcast free storage
You probably have something simular available ?

maybe one of these will work http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet … er=270-032
are the Karlson's in good/salvageable shape? - they can play well with strong enough motor coax and woofer/fullrange

OK, I got a chance to upload some to a Picasa album. If someone wants a different pictures taken just let me know.
Thanks,

OH, BTW, They are 16ohm so I don't think those parts express pioneer tweeters would work.
Thanks,

I guess if you and the amp aren't squeamish about a lower impedance on the top, then both tweeters could be replaced and the cap ~doubled in value - (assuming there's no coil in the highpass) - looks like someone made scaled Karlson 15 instead of building regular K12 - those should be fun if intact and if your Calrad Q is too high, save them for say a good 8" driver. Maybe there's 16 ohm Peerless paper cone tweeters or good copies somewhere? You might ask "Planet10"

Hey Bryan
The speaker you found are definately worth restoring. The Calrads were fairly efficient (spl or about 95db at 1 watt) so the tweeter that Freddy suggested may be a good candidate. I am assuming that one of the tweeters is working?? If so you can remove it and measure its DC resistance and then add a series resistor to the new speakers if necessary to achieve approximately the same cross-over frequency. Or if you want to minimize the number of components in the tweeters signal path you can simply calculate the cross-over frequency with the Calrad tweeter and simply select the correct capacitor value for the impedance of the new tweeters you select. Any of us here will be happy to help you with this process if you are unfamiliar with using some of the on-line cross-over calculators. I hope you have fun restoring these old speakers and cabinet and I am certain that you will enjoy listening to them.
Best Wishes

Have you checked all connections to the offending tweeter ? What about checking the tweeter itself with an ohm meter ?
Could be a bad tinsel lead . Alot of times a driver can pull the tinsel leads loose if the driver is being pushed hard ( alot of bass at high volumes causes the cone to throw far enough to tug at the leads). Very often this can be remedied with a careful resoldering of the tinsel leads.
I've never heard the CalRads you have, but have seen a graph for them and it looked pretty good. I have a different model of CalRad 12" and am quite happy after some basic modifications.

here's a Jamo tweeter for $3.75 http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdet … er=299-965

It looks like you have lots of room in the mounting cup to choose between many different tweeters.
I have no experience with the karlson type cabinet, but if the Calrad can play high enough in it, you might even get away with mounting a dome tweeter in there.
I my opinion the Calrad is worth saving, I bet it sounds pretty sweet in an open baffle too.
